What Makes Emotional Healing So Hard?

What Makes Emotional Healing So Hard?

By: Mark Myhre
When I was 5 years old our family moved to Starkville, Mississippi. My dad had secured a position as a research scientist at Miss. State Univ. that was simply too good to pass up.
Starkville was a small town like many other small towns across America. Life was slow and safe and predictable. All in all, not such a bad place to live.
For the next 12 years I was a Starkvillian. Like so many other young boys I spent most of my free time exploring the world from the comfort of a bicycle seat.
Life was full of adventures. Looking back now, it resembled a series of Norman Rockwell paintings.
But it wasn't always so idealistic. In fact, for over 20 years after leaving that small town I hated everything to do with Starkville. I called it a nightmare existence in a God-forsaken town.
So why do you suppose I hated it?
I Focused On The Negative
Like children everywhere, my wonder years consisted of good events, bad events, and many mediocre and neutral events. Good times that made me feel good. Bad times that made me feel bad. And many events stirred little emotional reaction at all.
However, my problem was that I discounted the good events, while elevating the bad ones.
The painful events on my past became like anchors - the pillars of the past. The defining moments of my life.
Certain events would happen, and rather than simply feeling the pain and moving on, I would suppress and repress those painful emotions.
Paradoxically, while I denied the feelings, I elevated the events. I would take a painful situation and make it much worse than it really was.
I Embellished My Past
How do you embellish a painful past? Intentionally exaggerate its stature and importance. Like a playwright constructing a play, I would add drama for the effect it created.
I would set the stage. Get the lighting just right. Play suspenseful music in the background. Create a prologue -
"The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent..."
Like one of those old Dragnet TV shows!
I built it up any way I could. I made it sacred.
And no matter what, I could *NOT* feel the feelings of those past events and let them go! I needed those unresolved emotions to breathe life into an otherwise-dead past.
I spent way too much of my time giving CPR to a corpse of the past. Ever given CPR? It'll wear you out! It's hard to do it for very long; it's just too much work.
Imagine doing it for decades.
I defined my life by those highly selective events of the past that were being kept alive ONLY by my emotional energy.
I Was Giving My Power To The Past
Thoughts and feelings are the very source of your power. Your power - your ability and willingness to act - comes about because of the constant stream of your thoughts and feelings.
Thoughts and feelings are constantly and consistently springing forth into your consciousness.
A stream of thoughts. A stream of feelings. Together they are the source of your power.
If you're using those thoughts and feelings to hold onto the past, then you'll have less power available to you now. Power that could be used to heal your emotions instead becomes diverted into holding the past in place.
I Built My Past Into A Frankenstein's Monster
Out of that handful of painful events I created a backbone. From the backbone I grew a skeleton. Surrounding the skeleton I grew muscles and skin and internal organs. I gave it a heart. I gave it a voice.
All that growth required conscious effort on my part. I had to keep reminding myself of those painful events.
"I really was wronged."
"I really was shamed."
"I really was abused."
Building them up and fleshing them out took a lot of my power. But it was worth it. I got to feel like a victim. I got to hide in my self pity. I was entitled. Hey, I EARNED the right to engage in any errant behavior I chose!
I earned the right to blame, to struggle, to manipulate and punish anybody I wanted. I earned my righteous arrogance because of my embellished pain of the past.
I was powerless as a result, but that's okay. I earned the right to be weak by all the effort I was expending to try to keep the past alive.
***
I took the best of me and gave it to a past that didn't even exist.
***
It takes constant effort to keep the past alive. You can't just set it and forget it - like a thermostat on the wall. You have to keep remembering it. You have to keep using today's power to reinforce the imprisonment of yesterday's power.
We Invest In The Past
The past is over, yet so often our power remains trapped in the emotional investment we've made in certain painful events of that dead past.
The past is over.
But the very power we need to break free of those memories is instead being diverted into a much more sinister goal. We invest a lot of time and energy creating a Frankenstein's monster of the past, and it's become too big to handle.
The power you need to heal the past is instead being used to try to keep it alive. It becomes a tangled mess.
You can't heal the past until you get more power.
You can't get more power until you heal the past.
So what's the answer? First you heal a little bit, and you retrieve a little power. Then, in your empowered state you heal a little more and get back a little more power. It happens layer by layer.
And it all begins with a willingness to change.

How to Lose Weight Healthily and Keep Fats Off Permanently

How to Lose Weight Healthily and Keep Fats Off Permanently
By: Chris Chew
Burn The Fats And Keep Them Off Permanently!

How many times have you heard a friend say, "I am on a diet"? Then what happens is your friend would lose some weight for a while before putting them all back on again.

I'll bet you have also heard someone said that "Cardio exercise is the best way for losing weight". This person would then religiously pound the treadmill but results are agonizingly slow. Soon, he gives up and gains back all the weight he had lost, and sometimes even gaining some extra kilos!

Ah, so you thought you've finally found the answer to permanent weight loss. You went on a strict diet and ran your heart out. Yes, you dropped kilos real quickly. But somehow, something is wrong when you look into the mirror in your birthday suit.

Yes you have lost some weight, but somehow your body shape isn't as flattering as you would like it to be. And then suddenly, you hit a plateau. No matter how strict your diet and cardio workouts are, your weight just simply refuses to drop any further. Then horrors of horrors, your kilograms actually started piling on! You get disillusioned with the unrewarding program and soon you succumbed, gave up and blame it on your bad genes. Sounds familiar? Why???

Here's why. Firstly, the heading of the article said "Burn The Fats" and not "Lose Weight". My point is, by merely losing weight, you will also lose some muscle mass in the process. By losing muscles, you will lose body tone and thus your metabolism for burning calories will slow down correspondingly. Therefore, you have got to maintain or even build muscles while losing fats. You may even gain some weight because muscles are heavier than fats. See the paradox?

To lose fats and keep them off permanently, you have to combine healthy eating habits, incorporate cardio exercises and lift weights to build muscles. For every kg of muscles you pack, you will burn an extra 70-100 calories per day even without doing anything. Can you imagine the benefits of building up 5kg of extra muscles? You will be burning 350 to 500 extra calories a day even if you just laze around. You'll be burning a Big Mac everyday! To further illustrate my point, 1 kg = about 7,700 calories, thus if you burn 500 calories a day because of the extra muscles you have, you will be burning off about 1 kg every 2 weeks simply because of your higher metabolism rate! You'll also look good, healthy and well-toned too! Is it any wonder why body builders eat so much but do not put on fats as easily?

Everyone knows that intensive cardio and strict diets cause you to lose muscle mass along with fats. So while you will lose some weight at the beginning, you will look like, well, just a smaller version of you without any muscle tone. That's not what we want isn't it?

As you lose more and more muscles, your metabolism plummets. On top of that, your body will start conserving fats and 'eat' your muscles for energy because it is reacting to your strict diet and is now in the "famine" mode. What happens then is that you will hit a plateau and no matter what you do, you will not reduce anymore weight and your fats will start creeping up again. This, in a nutshell, is the 'yo-yo' dieting effect that we hear so much about.

Losing fats is simple. And notice that I said 'simple' but did not say that it is 'easy'. My pointers will be simple to understand, but the execution will take determination and discipline on your part. It is a lifestyle change to keep the fats off permanently and you will be glad you did because you will get used to the changes in only a few weeks. By then, it will become a cultivated habit for you, especially when you are rewarded with a fitter, healthier, hunkier and sexier you, together with a glowing complexion to boot!

Here is how you do it. Simply, losing fat just means you must burn more calories than you consume. Period.

Lift weights with compound exercises. Forget those puny biceps and triceps curls. Go for big muscle groups like legs, back and chest routines. Why? Because you are working with bigger parts with more mass, and that means more body muscles are working, translating into more calories being expended. If you are fit, do giant sets (4 or more exercises or sets with no rest in between sets or exercise).

Here's an example. Lift only one set of each exercise with no rest in between the exercises. Choose a weight of about 60%-70% of what you normally lift and go for at least 25 reps. Lift more if you can or until your muscles are fatigued, then stop. Leave the gym. The whole routine should not take you more than 40 minutes. But remember to warm up thoroughly and cool down with some light movements and stretching.

After thoroughly warming up, start with squats, then dip, bench press, barbell row and military press. Sounds simple? Not so. You will be huffing, puffing and sweating profusely. What is achieved? You will have combined a cardio workout with a weightlifting workout and your metabolism will burn for the next several hours. Do this 3 times a week with at least a day's rest in between lifting days.

After 4-8 weeks, change the sequence of the exercises. So if you usually squat first, then squat last. Then after another 4-8 weeks, change some of the exercises, like substituting squats with dead lift, or bar bell rows with lat pull down. This is to shock your muscles so that they continue to adapt and grow.

For cardio, go for a run first thing in the morning before breakfast. If you are jogging at normal speed, sustain the jog for at least 45 minutes. If you are running at 65% to 80% of your maximum heart rate (you will be panting and unable to sing or complete a sentence while running), then 20-30 minutes will be enough. Anything more than that may cause muscle break down. You may intersperse the speed with slower jogs in between to catch your breath. Do these 5-6 times a week.

Eating habits? Just eat less of what you normally eat. For example if you have 2 slices of bread with 2 eggs in the morning, now take just one slice and an egg. Just eat half of what you eat but eat more regularly. Have 5 to 6 meals a day if you can. This is to feed your body frequently so that it will not go into starvation mode and start to conserve fats. At the same time, it will boost metabolism because your body burns calories while digesting the food. Chuck away all soft drinks, sugared drinks and stop adding sugar into your coffee and tea. Just by abstaining from sugary drinks, you may already have gotten rid yourself of 200 calories per day. Drink plenty of water instead and double the amount if you can.

Oh, by the way, all work and no play make Jack a dull tired boy and an exhausted Jill. Do choose a day to relax a week. No exercise on that day. Indulge in your favorite food if you must. Hey, pat yourself on the back and reward yourself for passing another grueling week. After all, your body needs to recover too.

As you reach your fat loss goals and you are happy with your muscular development, you can then take things a little easier. Hit the gym less frequently, have shorter runs and even relax a little in your diet. Because of your greater musculature, your body is now a fat-burning machine. You have earned that luxury.

Simple? Sure. But do you have the determination enough to lose those fats and keep them off permanently? It's your call folks!

Unique Poster Messages That Get Sales

Unique Poster Messages That Get Sales

By: Janice Jenkins

The style of your message in poster printing can be the key to success in terms of sales for your business. If you know the right approach to include in poster printing, it is possible to get your market excited about your products weeks before your actual project launch. There are several great approaches that are great for color posters. Let me tell you about the four that are most effective.

The limited offer approach.

Have you seen those posters that says hurry limited stocks only! or the ones that say available only at a limited time? These types of posters basically use that limited offer approach so that people will be encouraged to buy the items or avail of the offer much faster. It is a good technique if you want to capture a big market share in times when people spend a lot (such as in the holidays). It is also good to use technique if you have lots of rivals since you can increase your competitiveness with this poster message approach. Just add that limited offer indication in a nice place in your poster design and coordinate with your sales department to implement the offer. Just try it out and youll see the effect of better sales because of it.

The simple sale.

Another simple but effective approach is the simple sale. By printing posters that display the discount percentages and special two for one deal people can immediately be attracted to the bargains. This is especially effective for womens products since the thought of a bargain will usually be enough to get them to at least glance at what is for sale. In designing this approach it is best to use large and simple text to get the best impact as possible.

The lifestyle approach.

Now, if you are in it for the long run, it is good to use the lifestyle approach to your poster message. The lifestyle approach basically involves showing a certain kind of lifestyle that represents your products. It may be a luxurious lifestyle, an active lifestyle, a cool lifestyle or maybe even an alternative rebel lifestyle. This can give you advantages for marketing in a certain market demographic to get you increased sales for them. Just make sure you display the lifestyle correctly by composing your color poster images appropriately.

The sexy approach.

Finally, let us face it. Sexy sells a lot of products. If your product can easily be displayed with good looking models you should really try the sexy approach. People want to feel sexy. If your product seems to provide that feeling through the models of your color posters, people will of course consider buying your products. So if it is possible for your product line up for a sexy approach to your color poster messages, why not try it out? You will be pleasantly surprised of the benefits.

So what are you waiting for? Try out these great approaches to poster printing designs. They can be pretty effective.

I Want To Change Myself

By: Lisa
I firstly I should be joyful for entertainment, instead I am not happy. Perhaps others are absolutely disappointed about me.
Possibly, I have to accept everything around me. I am still like before when I meet some miserable things, I will lose my temper. I am useless. He is wrong but I am not right before him.
After that things, I think I did something wrong. The consequence is unpredictable. Others will see me in a wired way. I can not play with them any longer. I am not intelligent and I really do not know how to handle my emotion.
The life is always not gone be ok and I always get angry. I recognize I should not have done something when I was enraged. It is my character that I never think the result before act. I am not good at saving the situation and always want to avoid them. I truly want to change myself better.
My father is correct. I should not be similar to my mother. But I was with my mother since I was a baby. Who else should I be like? I see my future from my mother. I really do not want to be the one I see. I want to change myself.
I think I fritter away the past twenty years. I hope I can change myself after the birthday of 21. I hope I would be converted into an smart woman.
Only this situation makes me think so much. I never have time to think about my future before. Now my family is in a bad state and this make me have no choice to be concerned about how I live in the next time. I will always ask myself what I want to do.
I do not know what I can do in this society. I am not beautiful, bad figure, no high education and even without high intelligent.
I am out of this society. I am almost given up by my family. My father has high expectation on me, but I always make him disappointed. I really want to hear his prize on me, but it disappeared several years ago. Now what I can see is his serious face without any smile. His serous and critical words are always around me. So does my mother. I have to go through everyday in the criticizing. I have no choice but hiding in my room. I really hate myself why I am so stupid.
My 22 birthday is coming around. I do not know how to pass the day. However, I will work hard and let my parents lead a better life.
Destiny, I will challenge you. I want to change the fate and myself.
I am on the way.

Watch Me Watch Myself

Watch Me Watch Myself

By: C. Blair | Posted: 09th September 2010

Mirrors. When you really think about it, they’re everywhere. Sure they’re in your bedroom, your bathroom, and of course, those hideous ones in fitting rooms that should be banned by law. But those sneaky mirrors are not content to stay behind closed doors; just think about how many times a day you see your reflection in the most random of places. Take a typical walk from your car in the parking lot into the office: you see yourself in the car window as you get in...in your rearview mirror all the way to work (or your eyes, at least)...in the car window again as you get out...in the reflection of the glass door of the office building...in front of the shiny aluminum elevator doors (which can actually be amusing because they usually resemble those funhouse mirrors)...and in the blank computer monitor at your desk. And then you get to do it all over again when it’s time to leave...yippee.

And then there’s shopping, and you don’t even have to endure the harsh light and full-length mirrors of a fitting room that leave nothing to the imagination. Just walk down the sidewalk of your favorite strip mall...or any other mall for that matter. I don’t know how many times I’ve questioned why window washers must be so darn good at their job.

It really shouldn’t be any surprise that Americans tend to be unhappy with their physical appearance. In her article “Nip and Tuck Nation” for Sophie magazine, Biljana Kroll notes that 52% of American women “are dissatisfied with their appearance and wish to be made over”. Unfortunately, there really is no way to avoid looking at ourselves. Think about it: if you can’t look at yourself, you don’t know what you look like, and if you don’t know what you look like, you can’t be unhappy, now can you? (This is assuming, of course, that your loud-mouthed friend doesn’t come over and blurt out that you look like a hot mess...) We could stare straight ahead as we walk through the mall, and we could look at everything but the elevator doors, but quite frankly, who wants to make that kind of effort? In recent years, the media has been vilified for providing unrealistic images of “perfect” people...perfect, skinny, paunch-less, air-brushed, photo-shopped people.

Frankly, though, the media is only part of the problem. Admittedly, television bombards us with “perfection”, and we look at ourselves countless times a day and pick ourselves apart, telling ourselves what’s wrong with our bodies. And I’m not just talking about curvy women, or men who are thinning on top. There are skinny women out there (you know who you are!) who wish that they had a curvier butt or a bigger cup size. And there are wonderfully sculpted men who long for less back hair or a better complexion. But what is stopping us from seeing that we should accept our imperfections, that if we really want to change something about our appearance, we do it for our health or for self improvement - not because the latest magazine says we have to in order to be considered reasonably attractive by the general public.

But what if there are so many opportunities for us to observe ourselves because we are so obsessed with appearances? There is the whole media argument, that, due to its utter ubiquitousness, it is considered an “authority figure”. And because we are inherently trained to obey authorities without question, if it tells us that we should look or act a certain way, we will do our darndest to do so. According to Kroll, there are an estimated 35 reality makeover shows being shown on television, and 72% of women have “learned about anti-aging creams and surgical procedures from watching television programs”. But still, what really makes us think of media as an authority? The last time I checked, no one told me, “This is the television...do what it tells you.” No one has ever told me that I should try my hardest to look like the model on the magazine cover. But the truth is, no one has to tell us. Consider this: in a study designed to test adult peer pressure, adults were more likely to choose a wrong answer – despite knowing the correct answer - if everyone around them chose the same incorrect answer. In other words, if we are surrounded by something, even if we know that it’s wrong, we will be more inclined to copy it.

There has been some promising progress in this regard, however, with the advent of the “plus sized” model (although I find it odd that a woman who wears a 12-14 is considered to be plus-sized, even though this is the size worn by the majority of women...go figure). Still, girls and women have to be “told” that it’s okay to look like a “curvy” woman who wears “plus-sized” clothes.

This being said, doesn’t it ultimately rest with parents (the ultimate authority figures, usually) to tell their kids that what’s on TV isn’t always real, or that they don’t have to look perfect or mimic what they see? Kroll points out that 11,326 girls 18 and younger who got breast implants as graduation or birthday gifts from their parents in 2003, three times larger number than in 2002. The problem, though, is that the parents fall into the media/authority trap as well. They themselves are being bombarded with images of “perfect” parents, of career moms who can somehow balance work and family with ease, all while looking like they just came from a magazine fashion shoot.

So in actuality, the problem is not overly-impressionable kids with disillusioned parents, nor is it unrealistically idealistic images in the media. The problem is a sheep mentality. Rather than have the independence to think outside of the mold, we are teaching the current generation that it is okay to accept yourself...as long as you resemble your surroundings. Instead, parents should tell their children that yes, you should accept yourself, but if there is something that you want to change, then by all means, change it! But make sure that you’re changing for all the right reasons. Don’t blend in, stand out! Stand out so you can show those mirrors who’s boss!

How To Choose The Right Flooring To Fit Your Lifestyle

How To Choose The Right Flooring To Fit Your Lifestyle

By: Vinu | Posted: 01st April 2008

(ARA) – Choosing the right floor for your home is a big decision. It sets the tone for the whole interior of your house, and is the foundation for everything else you put in a room. Your choice should fit not only the way you want your home to look, but also the way your family lives.

“When making a decision about flooring, keep in mind such factors as design options, comfort, warmth, safety and maintenance,” says Piera Marotto of Forbo Linoleum, Inc. “And don’t forget you can have fun with color!”

Each family is unique and will have different demands and expectations for their flooring choice. A large family with kids will have a different set of needs than a retired couple. Pet owners will have particular requirements as well. Allergy and asthma sufferers will need to keep a clean and dust free environment.

For households that have light traffic, carpet is one option. It is an attractive addition to a room and the color choices are virtually unlimited. It is however, high maintenance -- regular vacuuming and shampooing are mandatory, and stains are a constant worry.

Hardwood floors are a classic choice for many homes, and they work with most kinds of décor. However, they are sensitive to climate changes and may expand and contract throughout the year. They are also susceptible to water damage and need constant maintenance. These kinds of floors can also be quite cool in the wintertime.

A flooring choice that has a lot more flexibility is Marmoleum. Made mainly from organic materials, it is an environmentally friendly surface that is easy to maintain and is enhanced by time. Exposure to the air serves to increase its durability, yet it remains a comfortable and warm surface on which to walk.

“Homeowners today want a flooring product that is easy to clean, comfortable to live with and one that looks great too,” says Marotto. “Marmoleum is an exciting alternative.”

Cleaning involves just the occasional dust and damp mopping. Unlike with other surfaces, muddy footprints and other stains don’t sink in. They can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth.

Not only is Marmoleum practical, it can enhance any interior design style from retro to modern to country. Available in sheet or tiles, it can be customized with decorative border and corner pieces. Colors range from solids to cubed or spattered effects and can be mixed in unlimited ways. Some of the color palettes offered include mixed greens, rhythmic blues, grey-dations, sunset’s boulevard, and neutral color collaborators.

What Are They Thinking About Me?

What Are They Thinking About Me?

By: Margaret Paul, Ph.D. | Posted: 10th January 2011

"You wouldn't worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do."--Eleanor RooseveltWhy should most people be thinking about you? They are far more concerned with what you are thinking about them to spend time thinking about you!Right now, take a moment to ponder the question: "How would I feel and what would I do differently if I never thought about what people think of me?"I pondered this question many years ago and discovered some things that changed my life:I discovered that I felt anxious whenever I worried about what someone thought of me, which made it impossible to be myself. As soon as I was concerned about their judgment or approval, I tried to become what I thought they wanted me to be to gain their approval. This made me so tense that even if I got their approval, I still felt bad.I discovered that I was drawn to being with judgmental people - people who were very much like my parents - and I was addicted to trying to get these judgmental people to approve of me. I saw that this was a dead end – that I had no control over getting judgmental and rejecting people to be loving and kind, and I stopped being drawn to these people.I discovered that even if I got their approval, it was always short-lived and I had to keep looking good and performing right to get it again. This was an exhausting way to live.I discovered that no matter how hard I worked on doing things right and being perfect and never making a mistake or failing, some people liked me and some didn't. I learned that if I was just myself and gave up being right and perfect, some people liked me and some didn't. I finally saw that trying so hard to get love or approval was a complete waste of my time and energy!I discovered that I was confusing love and approval. I learned that love is that which is unconditional and that people either gave it freely or they didn't and it was not something I could earn or control. I might be able to control getting some approval, but not love.I learned that, while approval felt good for the moment, it never fully filled me with love for myself, or confidence in myself.I discovered that when I gave myself the approval, love and attention that I was trying so hard to get from others, life became much easier and more fun!By really paying attention to my feelings and actions, I was able to completely give up even thinking about what others thought of me. I discovered the truth of what Terry Cole Whitaker said in the title of her book, "What Others Think Of Me Is None Of My Business."It is such a freedom to never think about what others think of me! I am free to speak my truth, to say yes or no according to what is in my highest good, to love with my whole heart and soul, to freely offer my gifts and talents, to trust my own feelings and higher guidance rather than buy into others' beliefs and opinions, to not be controlled by fear of making a mistake or fear of others' judgment, to laugh as loud as long as I want as I want, and to cry when I am hurting or moved.I am free to love myself and share my love with others with no agenda regarding how they will feel about me, and this is the greatest joy of all.Margaret Paul, Ph.D. is a best-selling author of 8 books, relationship expert, and co-creator of the powerful Inner Bonding® process - featured on Oprah. 4 Things I Do to Make Myself Feel Good When I Am Depressed

4 Things I Do to Make Myself Feel Good When I Am Depressed

By: Matthew Robert Payne | Posted: 26th November 2010

ONE

Ring a friend.

When I am feeling down often I can pick up the phone and ring a friend and suddenly my mind is off how I feel and I am listening to some other persons feeling. With questions and a talkative friend you can have a conversation that lasts up to an hour. Having a friend that you can ring in these times when you feel a bit low is a good thing. I have a friend that Has Bipolar disorder like me so he understands when I feel low and empathises with me.

TWO

Go out for a coffee with a friend or with a good book

You might not have a friend to go out to coffee with but taking a good book is always fun. It's good to shout yourself a nicely brewed coffee and a smile and a little chat to the people at the coffee shop that you are a regular at is always something that puts a little smile on my face.

There is something about rich brewed coffee at you favourite coffee shop. The people are great, the coffee goes down well and it isn't too expensive. It gets you out of the house for an hour or so.

THREE

Go see a movie

I don't know about you but for me a movie is wonderful escapism. Better then just a TV screen you are all in the dark with a great big screen. If you are like me also sometimes when I am really sad I will pick a really emotional movie so I have can have a nice big cry without anyone hearing me or seeing me in the loud dark cinema.

Just going into another persons life for a couple of hours can stop that mind whirring over and over keeping you worried and feeling down.

FOUR

Go visit a friend

My friend with Bipolar has a bad back and does not often leave his house. I can go over and spend many hours over there watching DVDs and cable TV and chatting. He enjoys the company and I enjoy being out and watching a few movies on cable for free.

Often when we a depressed we struggle to do all these things that I have listed. We are more prone to staying in bed, withdrawing from the world and suffering all alone. But we mustn't we must go out and meet life and let our experiences lighten our

Think Healthy Lifestyle, Not Diet

Think Healthy Lifestyle, Not Diet

By: quist34 | Posted: 30th November 2010

We love to hate that four-letter word: DIET. The word itself is
loaded with preconceived notions about starvation, deprivation,
discomfort and struggle. Who wants to go there? Not many of us.

Rather than starting another "diet," why not change your outlook
about eating and exercise, and start seeing your daily choices as
components of a healthy lifestyle?

Healthy Lifestyle Choice #1

The first thing to keep in mind is that strict "diets" don't
work. Oh sure, you can lose weight by sucking down a gallon of
cabbage soup every day for a week or two - but what happens when
you start eating other foods again? You gain the weight right
back.

Rather than embarking on strict, unrealistic eating plans, a
healthy lifestyle includes plenty of food options that you can
easily continue eating for the rest of your life. Remember, your
goal isn't just to "lose weight" but to keep it off! The best way
to do that is by making moderate choices that you can live with
forever.

Healthy Lifestyle Choice #2

Have you ever started a diet plan that included an intense,
challenging workout routine? It's not fun, is it? If you were
lucky enough not to strain muscles or otherwise injure yourself,
you probably still felt exhausted and sore and vowed never to
exercise again.

Fortunately you don't HAVE to work out like a pro athlete in
order to get in shape. Just moderate exercise several times a
week is enough for beginners. As you get stronger, you can
definitely increase the intensity and/or length of your workouts -
but let your body be your guide about how much it can handle! Any
feelings of pain, dizziness, or extreme fatigue are signs that
you're doing too much. (It's a good idea to speak to your doctor
before beginning an exercise routine, just to be sure you don't
have any health issues that could make exercise dangerous for you.)

Healthy Lifestyle Choice #3

Indulgences are okay! The last thing you want to do is restrict
all of the foods you love for the rest of your life. Even if you
think having a thin, sexy body would be worth the sacrifice,
you're going to be miserable if you don't allow yourself a little
flexibility in your eating plan. (Have you ever noticed that
naturally thin people indulge now and then too?)

The key in keeping indulgences under control is to have SMALL
indulgences, and only occasionally - perhaps once per week.
Rather than eating a monster slice of chocolate cake, you could
try just a few bites while savoring them immensely. You'd be
amazed at how satisfied you can be with a small serving of
something yummy if you take your time eating it and really enjoy
it.

This all sounds so much more appealing than a strict, inflexible,
deprivation "diet" doesn't it? This type of approach works even
better than a "diet" and is so much easier to stick to, which
dramatically improves your chances for permanent weight loss.

Useful Remodeling Ideas - BEFORE You Get Started!

Useful Remodeling Ideas - BEFORE You Get Started!
By: Michael Johnson
Home remodeling can be done for function or just because the house needs a new look, or a combination of the two. The focus of home remodeling for most homeowners is usually the kitchen or the bathrooms because those are the rooms that add the most value to a home and can become outdated more quickly. Just as in fashion, home décor goes through fads, and typically if bathrooms and kitchens have not been remodeled for ten years or more, it's obvious!

How many times have we heard the jokes about the ambitious do-it-yourself homeowner who starts project after project, only to stop in the middle and not finish any one of them? Usually the weekend warrior runs out of time, or perhaps money, or maybe he or she realizes that much more has been bitten off than can possibly be chewed. The results are evident - half-finished paintjobs that leave some walls in one color while others sport another; flooring has been exposed but never finished; kitchen cabinets are leaning against the wall yet will not be anchored in for weeks or perhaps months. Sadly, many a homeowner neglected to receive some sound remodeling tips prior to embarking on their tasks. To this end, here are some tips and tricks that will you to get off to a good start, before you actually pick up your checkbook or your tools!

One of the first remodeling tips that are usually neglected is the fact that it should have a general appeal. Granted, this may be common sense, yet it is astounding how many homeowners add or take away from their homes in such a way that a future sale is compromised. While the homeowner may think that a purple bathroom with yellow handprints is just darling, the potential buyer who tours the house two years down the line will probably wrinkle his nose at this décor faux pas. In the same way, if you decide to add on to your home, do it with an eye on the investment potential. In other words, do not do a half-fast job yourself, but instead pull the proper permits and hire licensed contractors to at least take a look before the building inspector stops by.

Experts have a tool box full of different small bathroom remodeling ideas, but most can be grouped into two categories: creating light and creating visual space. The illusions of space and light complement each other and expand a small space. Anyone who has tried to apply makeup in a small dark room knows how important light is, and it's created in a variety of ways, both natural and artificial. Natural light comes from windows, skylights, and any other opening that allows sun into the space. Whenever possible, windows should be left uncovered or only lightly covered by a filmy white or light-colored window covering. Paint colors from the cool end of the color spectrum reflect and enhance natural light, as do mirrors and light-colored flooring. Even a light-colored, inexpensive rug used to cover a dark floor can brighten up a space. Artificial light, originating from ceiling lights, wall sconces or lamps, can also brighten a space when employed artfully. Recessed lighting, which creates the illusion of space as well as light, could also be a viable option for you. Just be sure to use artificial light that is bright without being oppressive. Look in your home and garden store for special bulbs that can be used to effectively diffuse the light.

Other remodeling tips include the popularity versus functionality of a desired item, as well as value for the items. For example, just because recessed lighting is the latest fad, it may not be the lighting of choice for the bathroom where it may create dark spots and shade in undesirable areas. In addition to the foregoing, the value of the items purchased should remain intact, thus adding value to the home rather than simply costing money. Thereafter it is a smart idea to do a bit of research to see where home decorating trends are headed. Some old time favorites, such as ceiling tiles or even marble counter tops, are becoming a thing of the past, and if you are wondering about adding value to your home it is best to decorate with the market in mind. Naturally, not all homeowners will look to sell their properties within the next few years or until after the next remodel, yet this rule of thumb is certain to add value to the biggest investment you will ever make rather than just drain the bank account.

Hopefully these remodeling tips have added a little bit of common sense to the mix of weekend projects and large undertakings, and the next time you contemplate a project, please be sure to think it through from beginning to end before your jump into the car to head to the local big box store for supplies!
